Business Intelligence refers to turning data into information that is useful to make decisions. There is a spectrum of BI solutions. On one end of the spectrum, there are management or production reports, which can be very simple to generate. If the information is given on a timely basis and it’s exactly what’s needed, then you have BI. On the other end of the spectrum are interactive slicing and dicing tools often referred to as OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing). BI is also included as a component in Business Performance Management (BPM)  which also includes budgeting, forecasting, and consolidation.
